2026 Rate Stack

Kentucky taxes vehicles as property every year. For 2026, an Oldham County owner who lives outside the City of La Grange and outside any fire district pays $1.33683 per $100 of assessed value. That baseline is the sum of three rates from the Kentucky Department of Revenue's 2026 MOTAX Rate Book: the 45-cent state rate, Oldham County's 24.383-cent county-wide rate (general 13.383, ambulance 5, health 2.5, library 2, and extension 1.5 cents), and the 64.3-cent Oldham County school rate. The county general rate fell from 13.83 cents in 2025, so the baseline is 0.447 cents lower than 2025's $1.3413.

Fire districts add on top. Ballardsville, La Grange, North Oldham, Pewee Valley, South Oldham, and Westport fire districts each levy 10 cents on vehicles for 2026 (North Oldham rose from 9.5 cents), and Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS levies 17.5 cents (17.3 in 2025). La Grange is the only city with a vehicle levy, 20 cents. Crestwood, Goshen, Orchard Grass Hills, Pewee Valley, Prospect, and River Bluff levy nothing on vehicles, and the Crystal Lake subdivision road district levies nothing on vehicles.

How the Vehicle Is Valued

January 1 is the assessment date. Under KRS 132.485 the standard value is the vehicle's average trade-in value in the J.D. Power valuation manual, not the rough or clean trade-in value and not the price you paid. Vehicles 20 or more years old use their 19th-year value, reduced 10% for each year beyond 19. The Property Valuation Administrator (PVA) may adjust the value when you show that the standard value does not reflect the vehicle's condition, options, mileage, or title.

When and How to Pay

The Oldham County Clerk collects the tax with your registration renewal. Its main office is at 100 W. Jefferson Street #1 in La Grange ((502) 222-7645; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and its Crestwood office is at 6710 KY-146 ((502) 241-7621). Plates are usually renewed in the owner's birth month, and the Kentucky Department of Revenue mails a notice in the month before. Under KRS 134.810, the tax is due by the last day of the renewal month, or by the last day of the month the vehicle is transferred if that comes first. Once the tax is delinquent, late payment adds a 3% penalty if paid within 30 days of becoming delinquent (waived if paid within 5 days), 10% after that, plus 15% annual interest (KRS 134.810).

Disputing a value: assessment questions go to the Oldham County PVA (110 W. Jefferson Street, La Grange; (502) 222-9320), not the Clerk. Under Kentucky Department of Revenue guidance, talk to the PVA first; if that does not resolve it, a written protest goes to the Department of Revenue within 60 days of the date of notice.

Kentucky has no state relief on the first $20,000 of vehicle value like Virginia's PPTRA. For how a relief program changes a car tax bill, see our Virginia PPTRA explained guide.

Real Estate Tax

2025 Rates

The 2025 baseline real estate rate in Oldham County is $1.1304 per $100 of assessed value: the 10.6-cent state residential rate, Oldham County's 21.24-cent county-wide rate (general fiscal court 8.7, ambulance 4.74, library 3.9, health 2.5, and extension 1.4 cents), and the 81.2-cent Oldham County school rate, per the Kentucky Department of Revenue's 2025 Property Tax Rate Book. The baseline applies outside any city and fire district.

Fire districts and cities add to it. Example: a home outside any city in a 10-cent fire district paid 10.6 + 21.24 + 81.2 + 10 = $1.2304 per $100 for 2025, or about $3,076.00 on a $250,000 assessment, compared with about $2,826.00 at the baseline. A home in Crestwood adds the 10-cent city rate to whatever applies at that address.

Assessment, Bills, and Due Dates

Real estate is assessed at fair cash value as of January 1 by the Oldham County PVA; the Sheriff notes that it never assesses value and refers bill questions about value to the PVA. The Oldham County Sheriff collects property taxes for the state, the county, the school district, one city, and 18 districts, and mails bills by the end of September each year. The bill states when the taxes are due and what to do to avoid penalties; the Sheriff's website does not publish the dates.

For reference, Kentucky's default schedule under KRS 134.015 is a 2% discount if paid in full by November 1, the face amount from November 2 through December 31, a 5% penalty in January, and a 10% penalty after January 31. When bills go out late, the Department of Revenue can set an alternative schedule, so the dates printed on your bill control.

You can pay online through the Sheriff's current-year tax bill lookup (card payments carry a 2-3% processing fee charged by the card company) or at the Sheriff's office in the Fiscal Court Building, 100 W. Jefferson Street, Suite 2, La Grange ((502) 222-9501; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The Sheriff's site also has a separate lookup for Crestwood city tax bills.

La Grange city bills. The City of La Grange bills its own city property tax. Its tax page lists a 2% discount if received or postmarked by October 15 and the face amount through November 15; after November 15 bills are presumed delinquent and penalties may apply. The page does not print a year. Pay at City Hall, 307 West Jefferson, La Grange ((502) 222-1433), by mail, or online by card (2.75% fee) (City of La Grange).

Homestead Exemption

Homeowners who own and live in their home and are 65 or older, or classified as totally disabled, can deduct $49,100 from the home's assessed value for the 2025-2026 assessment years (Kentucky Department of Revenue; KRS 132.810). Applications go to the Oldham County PVA ((502) 222-9320).

Sales Tax

Rate and Composition

The sales tax rate in Oldham County is 6%, the same as everywhere in Kentucky. The Kentucky Department of Revenue states that there are no local sales and use taxes in Kentucky, so La Grange, Crestwood, and the other cities add nothing. Food and food ingredients for human consumption (groceries) are exempt under KRS 139.485. Candy, soft drinks, prepared food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and dietary supplements are taxable at 6%.
