2026 Rate Stack

Kentucky taxes vehicles as property every year. The 2026 Anderson County baseline is $1.173 per $100 of assessed value, the sum of three rates from the Kentucky Department of Revenue's 2026 MOTAX Rate Book: the 45-cent state rate, Anderson County's 21-cent county-wide rate (general 13.6, health 3, library 2.7, and extension 1.7 cents), and the 51.3-cent Anderson County school rate. Every rate is the same as in 2025, and there is one school district for the whole county.

One more levy applies at every address. The state's rate book notes that the Anderson County Fire Protection District "is county wide except City of Lawrenceburg", and it levies 10 cents on vehicles, so an owner outside Lawrenceburg pays $1.273. Inside Lawrenceburg the fire district does not apply and the city's 22.9-cent vehicle levy does, for $1.402.

How the Vehicle Is Valued

January 1 is the assessment date. Under KRS 132.485 the standard value is the vehicle's average trade-in value in the J.D. Power valuation manual, not the rough or clean trade-in value and not the price you paid. Vehicles 20 or more years old use their 19th-year value, reduced 10% for each year beyond 19. The Property Valuation Administrator (PVA) may adjust the value when you show that the standard value does not reflect the vehicle's condition, options, mileage, or title.

When and How to Pay

The Anderson County Clerk collects the tax with your registration renewal. Its office is at 100 South Main Street in Lawrenceburg ((502) 839-3041), with a drive-thru for motor vehicle registrations and taxes. The Clerk notes that vehicle values are assessed every year on January 1, that the Clerk only has the authority to collect the taxes (not to change assessments), and that renewal notices are mailed by the Department of Revenue. You can renew in person, by mail (add $2 for postage and handling), or online at drive.ky.gov. Plates are usually renewed in the owner's birth month. Under KRS 134.810, the tax is due by the last day of the renewal month, or by the last day of the month the vehicle is transferred if that comes first. Once the tax is delinquent, late payment adds a 3% penalty if paid within 30 days of becoming delinquent (waived if paid within 5 days), 10% after that, plus 15% annual interest (KRS 134.810).

Disputing a value: assessment questions go to the Anderson County PVA, not the Clerk. Under Kentucky Department of Revenue guidance, talk to the PVA first; if that does not resolve it, a written protest goes to the Department of Revenue within 60 days of the date of notice.

Kentucky has no state relief on the first $20,000 of vehicle value like Virginia's PPTRA. For how a relief program changes a car tax bill, see our Virginia PPTRA explained guide.

Assessment, Bills, and Due Dates

The Anderson County PVA, Brian Stivers, assesses property; the office is on Ollie Bowen in Lawrenceburg ((502) 839-4061), per the Department of Revenue's PVA directory and the county website. Homestead and disability exemptions require an application filed with the PVA.

The Anderson County Sheriff collects the county bill; the office is at 208 South Main Street in Lawrenceburg ((502) 839-4021). The Sheriff states that bills are mailed at the end of September and collection begins October 1. Its posted schedule, which carries no year label, is:

Anderson County Sheriff Property Tax Schedule (as posted)
Paid Amount Due
October 1 - November 12% discount
November 2 - December 31Face value of the bill
January 1 - January 315% penalty
February 1 - close of business April 1510% penalty plus a 10% Sheriff's add-on fee

The Sheriff accepts check, cash, or money order, does not accept partial payments, and states that postmarks do not apply. After April 15, unpaid bills go to the County Clerk, where payments carry a 20% County Attorney's fee, a 10% County Clerk's fee, and interest of 1% per month. The dates printed on your bill control.

Lawrenceburg sends its own city bill. The city states that taxes "are available October 1st of every year and due December 31st" and that payments received or postmarked after the due date are subject to a 12% penalty (City Hall, (502) 839-5372).

Homestead Exemption

Homeowners who own and live in their home and are 65 or older, or classified as totally disabled, can deduct $49,100 from the home's assessed value for the 2025-2026 assessment years (Kentucky Department of Revenue; KRS 132.810). Applications go to the Anderson County PVA.

Sales Tax

Rate and Composition

The sales tax rate in Anderson County is 6%, the same as everywhere in Kentucky. The Kentucky Department of Revenue states that there are no local sales and use taxes in Kentucky, so Lawrenceburg and the rest of the county add nothing. Food and food ingredients for human consumption (groceries) are exempt under KRS 139.485. Candy, soft drinks, prepared food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and dietary supplements are taxable at 6%.
