Vehicle Property (Car) Tax

2026 Rate Stack

Kentucky taxes vehicles as property every year. For 2026, a Bullitt County owner who lives outside any taxing city or fire district pays $1.1325 per $100 of assessed value. That baseline is the sum of three rates from the Kentucky Department of Revenue's 2026 MOTAX Rate Book: the 45-cent state rate, Bullitt County's 20.55-cent county-wide rate (general 15, health 2.4, library 2.12, and extension 1.03 cents), and the 47.7-cent Bullitt County school rate. Every Bullitt County vehicle rate is the same as in 2025.

Cities and fire districts add on top. The state's 2025 property rate book notes that the Mount Washington Fire District covers all of Mount Washington plus some unincorporated areas, and the Zoneton Fire District covers Hillview, Hunters Hollow, Pioneer Village, Fox Chase, and Hebron Estates plus some unincorporated areas. So an address inside Mount Washington pays $1.4825 per $100 (baseline + 15 city + 20 fire), and a Hillview address pays $1.4125 (baseline + 18 city + 10 fire). Lebanon Junction has its own city fire department and adds 34 cents ($1.4725). Hebron Estates and the Plum Creek Watershed levy nothing on vehicles.

An address inside a city that is also inside a fire district pays both: Mount Washington 113.25 + 15 + 20 = $1.4825; Hillview 113.25 + 18 + 10 = $1.4125; Pioneer Village $1.4425; Fox Chase $1.4070; Hunters Hollow $1.3901. Parts of Shepherdsville fall in the Nichols, Southeast, Mount Washington, or Zoneton fire districts (the Sheriff's tax districts 13-16); your notice shows the levies for your address. How the Vehicle Is Valued

January 1 is the assessment date. Under KRS 132.485 the standard value is the vehicle's average trade-in value in the J.D. Power valuation manual, not the rough or clean trade-in value and not the price you paid. Vehicles 20 or more years old use their 19th-year value, reduced 10% for each year beyond 19. The Property Valuation Administrator (PVA) may adjust the value when you show that the standard value does not reflect the vehicle's condition, options, mileage, or title.

When and How to Pay

The Bullitt County Clerk collects the tax with your registration renewal at 149 N. Walnut Street in Shepherdsville, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday until 6 p.m. ((502) 543-2513). You can also renew by mail (PO Box 6, Shepherdsville, KY 40165), through the drop box on the wall outside the Clerk's office, or online through the state renewal link on the Clerk's site; mail, drop box, and web renewals are returned by USPS. Plates are usually renewed in the owner's birth month, and the Kentucky Department of Revenue mails a notice in the month before. Under KRS 134.810, the tax is due by the last day of the renewal month, or by the last day of the month the vehicle is transferred if that comes first. Once the tax is delinquent, late payment adds a 3% penalty if paid within 30 days of becoming delinquent (waived if paid within 5 days), 10% after that, plus 15% annual interest (KRS 134.810).

Disputing a value: assessment questions go to the Bullitt County PVA (149 N. Walnut Street, 2nd floor, Shepherdsville; (502) 543-7480), not the Clerk. Under Kentucky Department of Revenue guidance, talk to the PVA first; if that does not resolve it, a written protest goes to the Department of Revenue within 60 days of the date of notice.

Kentucky has no state relief on the first $20,000 of vehicle value like Virginia's PPTRA. For how a relief program changes a car tax bill, see our Virginia PPTRA explained guide.

Real Estate Tax

2025 Rates

The 2025 baseline real estate rate in Bullitt County is $1.038 per $100 of assessed value: the 10.6-cent state residential rate, Bullitt County's 17.5-cent county-wide rate (general fiscal court 9, library 5.2, health 2.4, and extension 0.9 cents), and the 75.7-cent Bullitt County school rate, per the Kentucky Department of Revenue's 2025 Property Tax Rate Book. The baseline applies outside any city, fire district, and the Plum Creek Watershed.

Cities and fire districts add to it. Example: a home inside Mount Washington and its fire district paid 10.6 + 17.5 + 75.7 + 8.7 (City of Mount Washington) + 20 (Mount Washington Fire District) = $1.325 per $100 for 2025, or about $3,312.50 on a $250,000 assessment, compared with about $2,595.00 at the baseline. A Shepherdsville home outside the fire districts paid 103.8 + 11.61 = $1.1541, about $2,885.25.

Assessment, Bills, and Due Dates

Real estate is assessed at fair cash value as of January 1 by the Bullitt County PVA. The Bullitt County Sheriff collects state, county, school, and district property taxes. The Sheriff normally receives the bills from the County Clerk at the end of September, cannot accept payment before then, and expects most owners to receive bills in the first week of October. For the 2026 tax year the bill shows four dates and amounts, received or postmarked by:

  • November 1, 2026: face value less a 2% discount
  • December 31, 2026: face value
  • January 31, 2027: face value plus a 5% penalty
  • April 15, 2027: face value plus a 21% penalty

Pay by mail (Bullitt County Sheriff, P.O. Box 205, Shepherdsville, KY 40165), in person at the Sheriff's office in the Bullitt County Courthouse (300 South Buckman Street; (502) 543-2514), online through the Sheriff's site (card fees apply), or by check at Bullitt County Stock Yards Bank branches from October 1 to December 31. The Sheriff cannot accept partial payments, and after April 1 personal and business checks are no longer accepted. If no bill has arrived by mid-October, the Sheriff asks owners to call for a duplicate. Prior-year delinquent real estate bills are paid off through the County Clerk ((502) 955-6369).

City bills. Shepherdsville city tax is combined with the county bill. Mount Washington, Hillview, Hunters Hollow, Pioneer Village, Fox Chase, Lebanon Junction, and Hebron Estates send separate city tax bills (Bullitt County Sheriff). Mount Washington residents receive both a city bill and the Sheriff's county bill; the City lists a 2% discount through November 30 and face value through December 31, with penalty and interest from January 1 (City of Mount Washington, 311 Snapp Street; (502) 538-4216).

Homestead Exemption

Homeowners who own and live in their home and are 65 or older, or classified as totally disabled, can deduct $49,100 from the home's assessed value for the 2025-2026 assessment years (Kentucky Department of Revenue; KRS 132.810). The Sheriff's page says owners 65 or older must own and occupy the property and be 65 as of January 1 of the tax year, and asks them to apply at the Bullitt County PVA ((502) 543-7480) before paying the tax bill.

Sales Tax

Rate and Composition

The sales tax rate in Bullitt County is 6%, the same as everywhere in Kentucky. The Kentucky Department of Revenue states that there are no local sales and use taxes in Kentucky, so Shepherdsville, Mount Washington, and the other cities add nothing. Food and food ingredients for human consumption (groceries) are exempt under KRS 139.485. Candy, soft drinks, prepared food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and dietary supplements are taxable at 6%.
